Holiday Altered Project Ideas from our Biker Chicks

Our Biker Chicks have been at it again with some amazing altered ideas for the upcoming Holiday...

Diorama by Biker Chick Jen Chesnick

I created this diorama actually with ornaments in mind!  I ended up going larger 8x8, but this design would work perfectly for ornaments as gifts for friends and family. I cut my design using my Silhouette then turned it into a hanging with some twine.  I layered the embellishments on the bottom center as my focal point.  I finished it off with some glitter mist.  Everything holiday is better with glitter!

Altered Wreath by Biker Chick Lisa Swift

I had so much fun altering this pre-lit wreath! All it took was an assortment of embellishments from the Once Upon a Christmas collection and some bits and pieces of ribbon. When all of the clusters were adhered (using a hot glue gun), I added in some small ball ornaments to fill in the "empty" spots and to bring in a bit of shine and sparkle.

Let's take a closer look at each of the embellishment clusters around the wreath.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Corrie Jones

Biker Chick Corrie Jones continues to set the mood for the holiday with our Once Upon a Christmas collection.  Yesterday our Biker Chicks shared card ideas and today Corrie follows up with gift tags, but let's have her tell you all about it...

I love, love, LOVE the colors in Once Upon a Christmas.  To me they are a perfectly traditional and comfortable mix.  Cozy and festive.  Awesome.  I am working towards getting ready for the holidays and figured that a few new gift tags was exactly what I needed to stock up on.  These will be perfect for wrapping with kraft wrapping paper.  I love that look.

The cardstock shapes have a little bit of foil to them which is great for just a touch of sparkle.  Nothing too over the top, just a little fun.

The "Peace on Earth" star is probably my favorite thing in the collection.  It got me singing Christmas carols (in my head).  How exciting that this music will be on the radio in just a couple of weeks!!!!!  (Yes, I will listen to Christmas music from the day after Thanksgiving until they take it off the day after Christmas.)

I am so excited to have the vellum tape back in this collection.  Too bad I ended up using almost the entire package on one tag.  But the sheerness looks so good on kraft cardstock.


So, five tags down.  How many more to go???

Biker Chick Inspiration with Robbie Herring

Biker Chick Robbie Herring shares an Acorn Hollow layout today, but let's have Robbie tell you all about it...

I'm finding it a bit sad that this is my last post with Acorn Hollow on the blog!  I just love how adorable and versatile this collection is!  You can be sure that I'm going to be holding on to everything that I haven't used and you'll be seeing it again in my galleries and on my blog.

I couldn't resist this sweet picture of a friend and her daughter that was taken last Thanksgiving.  I wanted to have a place for her to journal herself and her daughter, so the 5 things pocket was the perfect solution.  As I was putting the page together, I thought about how cute the shapes and details on the inserts were.  I just made sense for me, the ultimate shape lover, to use them in my design as a banner instead of the intended way in the envelopes.

I also layered the 5 things large shape with journaling card and topped it with a few pieces from the chipboard, paper crafting kit and even a clear cut for some added interest to my page.

Because I already had a place for journalling I used the yellow journaling card as an added embellishment and simply added the names and date.  You might notice that the white flower is a clear cut shape.  I chose to add a foam dot behind it and was careful to chose one that fit inside of the 'stitching'.  Popping up clear cuts is a fun thing to do and they stand up beautifully to the test of time in your scrapbooks.  They are very tough to bend so they are actually a really great way to add some extra dimension.

Clustered embellishing in the lower right corner completes the balance of this layout.  I mixed both the paper crafting kit and the clear cuts to this corner.  Another tiny detail is the pop-up center of the white flower.  I used a small punch and made the center from the Button, Button! paper.  You might have noticed one on the other corner, too.   It's a tiny little detail and finished off the centers of my flower with the colors I wanted to add in those small spaces.

Acorn Hollow is one of my favorite LYB lines to date!  I love the earthy colors and the copper foil effects totally ROCK!!  To stretch the life of this product line I added a fun Halloween twist.  The owls became witches with little paper pieced hats.  I love when it all comes together easily and this page was a quick one.  Happy Halloween!

Acorn Hollow Page by Biker Chick Liz Qualman

Last year's Superman is this year's hero to be named.  My son is a little obsessed with super heroes and was only too happy to be the cape wearing Superman, but this year he is between Spiderman and Thor.  We will just have to wait and see which costume he chooses (since he conveniently has both stashed in his closet thanks go overly helpful relative if you KWIM).  Love how the subtle blue colors in the Acorn Hollow collection can compliment this bright blue costume where other Halloween specific collections might clash with the man of steel.

These owls are just way too cute for their own good!  Had to have them perch right over the hero himself.  They are the watchful eyes of all the Halloween mischief and fun!

Use the banners in the Paper Crafting Kit to make a fun title.  These banners fold and pop off the page, so I thought it would be fun to make a play on words for the title and instead of All Hallow's Eve, we have Fall Hallow's Eve.  I know...corny!  Don't forget the darling chipboard leaves to add some detail.

Boy, oh boy, this Xyron Create A Sticker Maker is slick-stuff! Have y’all enjoyed seeing all the projects both here and on Xyron’s blog?

I’ll be honest, I used to get so frustrated with the limitations I had using my Xyron  1.5” Create A Sticker—you know the ever popular “X”. Why? Because, well, 1.5” just felt so limiting in my little creative world. 

But, when Xyron sent me the 2.5” Create A Sticker…..wowza! It instantly changed my mind when it comes to sticker making.  It’s amazing how freeing that extra inch can be in the world of crafting.

The first thing I noticed was no longer did I have that crinkly plastic film over the item I was stickering.  And no longer did I have exposed adhesive! No sticky fingers, no messy glue, no fussing with glue dots (I’ve lovingly nicknamed them glue boogers….ha!).

What makes it even more awesome is that now, the backing material is even a bit different and my punches could go through it like butter! No more jammed punches.

So, for this layout, I ripped a handful of pages out of my 6x6 paper pad, and then trimmed them down to 1 ¼” wide. Placed two strips side by side, but not overlapping, then cranked them through the Create A Sticker machine.

Then I used a 1” circle punch to punch down the length of each patterned paper. In less than 5 minutes, I had 50+ 1” circles with edge-to-edge adhesive. All I needed to do was peel off the protective backing and stick them to my page.

So while the layered circle embellishing looks super fussy, reality is this page was constructed in 20 minutes tops! 

Xyron 2.5” Create A Sticker? In my opinion, a must have in every scrapboooker’s tool arsenal. Get yourself one!

Little Yellow Bicycle "Sticks" with Xyron - Blog Swap Day 3

The creativity continues between Little Yellow Bicycle and Xyron.  It has been a great surprise each day to stop by the Xyron Design Team Blog to see all of the wonderful Fall creations with our Acorn Hollow collection.  Today we continue "Sticking Together" and encourage our fans to "stick" with us too.  We have some goodies from Xyron to share, please see the end of this post for more details.

I love the bright colors of the Acorn Hollow collection.  It is great for both autumn and everyday pages.  I thought the collection would definitely compliment these photos of my son playing at the park.  I clustered three photos (4x4, 4x5 and wallet-sized) to add more meaning from the day and to move the eyes around the page.  My son is famous for his funny faces, so I had to add one instead of a traditional smiling photo. The baker's twine border keeps all the photos grounded in the middle.

I also love all of the beautiful foiling on the Acorn Hollow embellishments and how you can easily layer the clear cut stickers and chipboard shapes together.  The green tree is a clear cut shape and the orange tree is chipboard.

The Xyron 2.5" Create-a-Sticker was super easy to use and perfect for both the chipboard and clear cut shapes.  They easily crank through the machine and do NOT need to dry - which for an impatient scrapbooker like me, is a little slice of heaven.  I was particularly happy that the adhesive was clear and does not ruin the clear cut shapes.

I liked the idea of tying the baker's twine together at the ends and then gluing it down as a "free form" frame.  The black and white twine was a nice contrast to the fall colors and pulled the photos and papers together.

I'm a big fan of using LYB journal tickets and fresh verse stickers to make a title.  It saves you from having to rely on alphabets and will fit together in fun clusters, like this one where I added a chipboard leaf and some jewel stickers as an accent.

Altered Project by Biker Chick Heather Leopard

Heather here to say that I am soo excited to play with the new Xyron Create a Sticker product that they sent to the Little Yellow Bicycle design team! It is so easy to make your own sticker from whatever paper design you are working with. I just so happened to use the Little Yellow Bicycle Acorn Hollow goodies for today's project, which is a paper pumpkin.

I cut the pumpkin using my CAMEO and a cutting file I downloaded from their store but you could easily do this by cutting multiple circles and then perforating the inside edges to form a triangle. I also cut a stem and set it aside. Once the circles were cut I ran them through the sticker maker.

They came out on a long strip as shown below and all I had to do was peel them off. Instantly I had a great little sticker.

Next, I folded the circles at the edges and adhered them, sticky sides together, to each other, turning the perforated flaps up. I continued to adhere them to each other until they formed a "ball". I added the stem and some ribbon to top off the project.


I think these would look great with two more pumpkins in different sizes, perched on my table in the entryway.

Sticking Together, Little Yellow Bicycle and Xyron Blog Swap - Day 1

Did you know the Xyron Create a Sticker machines work with chipboard?  I first ran the raccoon chipboard piece from the Acorn Hollow chipboard set through my sticker maker.  Next I layered it on top of the frame chipboard piece and ran it through again.  The sticker maker didn't even flinch! Chipboard is no match!  I simply pressed around the edged of the chipboard, peeled back the film and attached the chipboard to my card.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Heather Leopard

Biker Chick Heather Leopard shares a great home décor idea which she created with our Acorn Hollow collection.  But let's have Heather tell you all about it...

 

Every year at this time of year I start to get in the holiday mood. It all starts in October with my 2 daughters' birthdays, then Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's all right in a row and it just gets me into the spirit of the holidays. Today I thought I'd show you a fun way to make this fun holiday wall decor.

This was so easy to make and I've received so many compliments on it already. I've included a supply list below but you will need embroidery hoop, muslin, mists, ribbon and Little Yellow Bicycle Acorn Hollow goodies. The first thing I did was measure and cut the muslin, leaving plenty around the edges so I could pull it taut. I then used spray mist to give it a little extra pizzazz. I added the burlap and ribbon and hooked the hoop together. This is where the real fun started. 

I used the area inside the hoop to create little scenes. I layered chipboard and sticker trees and the little fox at the bottom. Then I added the "SO VERY thankful" sentiment over the ribbon.

Next I added the chipboard "FALL" letters and the tree limb, placing the owl sticker over the limb. I topped it off with a little flowers/leaves medley from the paper crafting kit. Ideally you would use this inside the house since I used a lot of paper product but I am sure you could seal it to use it on your front door. Luckily, my front door is under a large covered patio so that's where you'll find mine.

I plan to switch out the insides for the different holidays.

With a little help from the Target Dollar Spot, gift packaging is a breeze!  Last time I was shopping at Target I picked up a cute little metal pail and felt bucket that I thought would help me incorporate my signature bright, colorful style, yet still match well with rich tones in the Acorn Hollow collection.

The yellow pail highlights a layered collage of mostly chipboard embellishments. While the felt bucket was already embellished with the gold and burgundy leaves, I added to the homespun look by hand stitching the “fall” chipboard letters to the bucket to give it a cohesive look. 

Both are filled with shredded paper, a bottle of scented shower gel, and then finished off with an embellished journaling card that is just the perfect size for a short hand-written note.  These two gifts went from drab to fabulous in less than 15 minutes.

Fall Treat Bags by Biker Chick Jen Chesnick

While surfing Pinterest I was inspired to make one of those tasty recipes for toffee. Of course you need a cute bag to stash your gift to friends in.  I cut the small bags using my cameo and Acorn Hollow paper. I then created something of a tag using the paper crafting kit. A sweet treat for friends!

Little Yellow Bicycle Brings Creativity to Local Senior Center

Today I would love to share a Hello Fall! project and a wonderful experience that I had with some amazing women at my local Senior Citizens Center.  Over the summer, I contacted the coordinator of the center to see if I could volunteer my time and bring a craft project for the seniors to work on.  The coordinator was enthusiastic, but warned me that the last art project they tried was not a big hit.

I'm not sure they knew what to expect.  Maybe they thought it would be construction paper and paste...  But as you and I know, when Little Yellow Bicycle walks through the door, there is a lot of super fun crafting to be done and that is exactly what these ladies did to make this mini album recipe book.

They were such an amazing group and I was told that many of them have severe arthritis and a few are struggling with different forms of dementia.  But you would never have guessed this to be the case from the enthusiasm and engagement from the group.

Because some of the participants have severe arthirtis, I designed a project that required almost no cutting with scissors and really just involved gluing it together.  Little Yellow Bicycle makes chipboard albums that have precut papers, so we used the LYB101 6 x 12 Chipboard Album and the Hello Fall! paper pad with all of the paper cut to fit the album.

Each page is a combination of the Hello Fall! 6 x 12 paper pad, 6 x 6 Decorative Edge Cardstock and the 5 Things Envelopes.  The idea is that you add your favorite recipes on a 4 x 6 notecard and then write a special note about the recipe on the 5 Things Envelope.

Once we got organized, it was easy for the participants to flip through the paper pad, find the papers they wanted to use and then adhere them to the chipboard album.

The colors in the Hello Fall! collection are so beautiful and the Decorative Edge cardstock add a fun and easy photo/recipe mat to each page.

Just add a litle bit of chipboard, some fresh verse stickers and jewel stickers.  The page looks pretty polished and doesn't require any cutting unless you prefer to mat the recipe with another color like I did with the green patterned paper.

The recipe book was so easy to put together, that even my 4 year old son was able to help with some of the project.  He was my sidekick for the day.

I just love the artwork on this collection and the tree is absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to see what some of the ladies write on the notes in the envelopes and I bet their recipes will be fantastic.  One of the women is a phenomenal baker, so I REALLY want to see her finished recipe book.

This woman was so adorable.  She told me that she was not very good at projects, but with a little assistance, she had a beautiful recipe book to take home with her and the smile and appreciation from all of the participants made this activity one of the very best I have ever done.

Everybody was diligent about putting their recipe books together and the coordinator said that she has never seen the group have so much fun working on a project.  All of the volunteers that come each week to work with the seniors  were glad that the project was stimulating the right side of their brains, which is sometimes hard to plan for...

I guess all of us crafters take the right sides of our brains for granted, because we probably over stimulate them with creativity, but we probably need to do a few crossword puzzles and try to reason through why we need so many craft supplies to make sure we stimulate the left side too.

It was such a wonderful day and the best part is they loved it so much that they want me to come back to make holiday cards and of course we'll be working with Little Yellow Bicycle.

Bike Chick Inspiration with Suzanne Sergi

Biker Chick Suzanne Sergi has a gorgeous Acorn Hollow page to share today, but we will let her tell you all about it...

If only I could go back to 2009. My sweet little guy warms my heart on any cold day! Even though he is older, we still follow the same family traditions. I live in Sunny California, so it is sunny all year around!  However, the Acorn Hollow collection is perfect for documenting your pumpkin patch photos, too.

On this page, I wanted to keep the emphasis on the photo. I kept my embellishments off to the left hand side of the page. One thing I love about LYB are all the embellishments that coordinate with the papers! I pulled my title from the journaling cards packet. I layered this on top of a scallop I punched from the coordinating 6x6 paper pad. There are lots of layers surrounding my title, and you can see how easily it is to build dimension, simply by pulling from the papercrafting kit, and the clear shapes. I fell in love with the leaf diecuts, and tucked them underneath the title. You will also see a bit of them in the bottom lower right hand side! This collection is full of browns, greens, and oranges! Just in time as the weather begins to change!

Altered Acorn Hollow Projects with Our Biker Chicks

Our Biker Chicks have been busy altering items especially for Fall and we think they have some pretty fantastic ideas to inspire you with our Acorn Hollow collection...

Altered Chalkboard by Biker Chick Tania Willis

When creating a project for seasonal display in your home, look beyond a frameable project and lean into the more dimensional art with an altered item.  Here, I’ve altered a chalkboard from my husband’s childhood by adhering embellishments directly onto the slate and frame of the board.  If you use glue dots to adhere your items, you can even pull them back off after the season is over and create a new one for the next season! 

The embellishments can even be recycled back into your stash or taken right from the altered item and place onto a layout using the same design, just replacing the center sentiment with a photo or two.  If you’re looking for a more permanent option, I recommend using a hot glue gun to adhere your embellishments.

Altered Milk Bottles by Biker Chick Lisa Swift

I bought these small milk bottle-shaped vases at Target's Dollar Spot some time ago. They came with rub on words that said "live", "love" and "laugh". Over time the letters started flaking off (well, washing them may have had something to do with that, LOL) and I put them aside with the intention that I would alter them "some day". When I was given the assignment to create an altered project for today's blog post, I knew exactly what I was going to do. With just a few supplies from the Acorn Hollow collection, I was able to transform these cuties from drab to fab and I now have some cute fall decor to boot! Let's take a closer look at the individual pieces...

This one uses just three pieces from the Paper Crafting Kit and a small band of patterned paper from the 6x6 Paper Pad.



Uses the same supplies as the first piece with a scrap of twine added in to finish it off.



This last example uses leaves from the Paper Crafting Kit and one of the 5 Things Pockets (number 3 because we're a family of 3).

So there you have it. A simple and fun fall decor project. :)

Biker Chick Inspiration with Lisa Swift

Biker Chick Lisa Swift joins us today with an Acorn Hollow project, but let's have her tell you all about it...

Fall is my favorite season (just like the Fresh Verse sticker on my layout says). The brilliant colors alone are amazing, but add in crisp apples and pretty pumpkins and I'm sold. Our first apple picking trip this year resulted in five pounds of Gala apples that my husband turned into a delicious spiced applesauce. I think it's time to go back to the orchard to see what's ready for picking and ask him to make his famous apple crumb pie. :)

Layering is one of my favorite techniques to use on a page. Overlapping and clustering elements adds interest to a layout and gives it a nice cohesive look. Even with the number of embellishments I used on here, the photo still takes center stage.

Don't be afraid to "repurpose" or even alter embellishments. Look at them as separate parts to be used in different ways. For example, the 5 Things Pockets from the Acorn Hollow collection come with fun doodled journaling inserts. Rather than keeping the two pieces together, I used the insert as a grounding element for the "sweet" sticker and the pocket to house a chipboard owl (and how cute is that owl?)

Other ways to change up or enhance embellishments are: add a rhinestone or pearl center to a floral stick pin or use buttons at the end of a banner to add some texture and dimension.

I hope the ideas I shared today will help you look at your embellishments in a new way. :)

Get Ready for Acorn Hollow!

Fall in Texas can be a bit unpredictable, but all in all it's usually in the 70's/80's and we spend a lot more time outdoors. Each year we make the trek from city life to country life and enjoy a day at a local farm, where you can interact with farm animals of all kinds, take a hayride, pick you own pumpkins and soo much more. It really is a day's worth of fun fill activities.  One thing we always love to do is climb up on the tractors and pretend to be tending to the crops.  The Acorn Hollow collection is great for all your fall photos but it's very versatile with the rich colors. Perfect for any nature lover as well.


I used the paper crafting kit and a Fresh Verse sticker to create my title "Happy Harvest".

The journaling cards in this collection are soo cool...some have foil on them and others have fun decorative edging. I used mine to feature some hidden journaling, which I wrote on after this photo was taken.

For this fall layout I created my title using my Silhouette software.  Nothing fancy to it really!  To create your title type out your letters using the text box, right click and "un-group" your letters.  Layout your letters and shapes so they are overlapping or touching on an edge somewhere.  Then select all and click "weld". It might take a few tries!  Just keep moving your letters around until they connect.  Once they are welded select all again and choose "group" that will keep all your dots and things together for cutting.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Corrie Jones

Biker Chick Corrie Jones had a really great layout page idea to share with our Makin' the Grade collection today, but let's have Corrie tell you all about it ...

This has been a big year for me as a mom.  My youngest started school.  Real school.  Kindergarten.  We made the decision to make her wait an extra year last year so she would be the oldest in her class instead of the youngest, which was the right thing to do, but I think it made it even harder on me.  Because I had her home with me (except for half day preschool) longer.  She is of course thriving, but I am still amazed everyday that she is big enough to walk into that school with out me, that she can carry her lunch tray all by herself and that her huge backpack doesn't swallow her.

Here she is on the first day of school, barely letting me take a zillion pictures of this big day.


An easy way to create a layout is to use a grid as the base.  The paper squares on mine are 2.5 inches.  I do not try to have them all line up perfectly so it takes a lot of the pressure off.  Then you have little boxes to embellish with all the fun stuff in the line.

She is really into owls right now so those were a MUST on this layout.  I love all the bits and pieces of school stuff in the Makin' the Grade line.  The papers are so authentically school too.  Some, like this reminding me of the old green chalkboards and clapping erasers at recess.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Vicki Boutin

We are happy to share a project today from Biker Chick Vicki Boutin.  It is always a treat to get a closer look at the creative process of a designer like Vicki, but let's have her tell you all about it...

I often love elements from the Little Yellow Bicycle themed lines but want to use them for pages or projects that are not related to a particular theme.  In this case I mixed a little Makin' the Grade with The Escape.  I love these lines and the colors actually work well together.  I mixed papers and stickers and pulled together a layout in less than an hour.

I love the cork elements from Makin' the Grade and they were just begging to be altered! 

So I pulled out a few goodies and personalized them for my page.

I sprayed the stars with a little mistable paint and let them dry.

Next I layered the misted stars with a fun background stamp and black ink.

To finish off the cork letters, I stamped them with a script stamp and black ink.

 

 

I love crafting embellishments that are great for altering and these cork elements were no exception!  I'd love to hear if you ahve found any ways to bling up other LYB products.  I am always looking for something new to try.  Thanks for taking the time to visit!  Happy crafting!

Mix it Up for Fall

Today our Biker Chicks wanted to show you how you can use or mix up any of our collections to create a Fall project.  We know our fans have a lot of LYB lying around the scraproom, so we thought it would be fun to repurpose some of our older collections.

Living in Texas, back to school means football season! I have a million football and cheerleader photos from my kid's years in school. I thought it would be fun to mix up the Makin' the Grade collection with the Get Your Game On collection and I couldn't resist adding in a chipboard frame from the Escape collection.

The doodle stickers and flowers in the Makin' the Grade collection are some of my favorite parts of it. I decided to play up the doodling on my layout because it seems to be something that most teen girls do. It made cheer pictures seem like the right choice for pulling it all together

Tip: I made the flowers by just drawing them on white cardstock and then cutting them out. I LOVE the way that the Sakura Glaze pens work for doodling heavy. I also really love the deep black color. For the white doodles, I used the Sakura Souffle Pen. There are a few great choices for white pens, but I like the touch of texture that the Souffle Pens add.

Biker Chick Liz Qualman

Can pink be a fall color?  Why not, it's the color that a lot of kids wear and is only slightly lighter than red.  That is what I thought when I pulled out these photos of my daughter from a trip to the park a couple weeks ago.  I love all the green and brown hues in the Paradise collection, so why not add pink to the Fall palette?  In fact, pink is the new red - lol.

I mixed in some of the corrugated chipboard from our Hello Fall! collection to ground the brighter colors and add more of the Fall elements to the page.

This squirrel has got to be one of the cutest things ever!  I just added a bit of bling for the eye and added it to the page with some foam tape.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Jenny Chesnick

Check out how Biker Chick Jenny Chesnick used our Makin' the Grade collection to create a Fall sports page...

Hi LYB Fans! Jen here with another Making the Grade project. Today I wanted to showcase one of my favorites ways to create a title.  It's a hot trend right now to create titles and shapes with your die cutting machine and using that negative.  It gives the layout a unique feel and dimension.

For this sports themed school project I wanted to use the school name and mascot.  I did a simple design in my Silhouette software using Georgia font.  I cut the title directly into my background 12x12 paper then lined the backside with a contrasting color paper.  You could also line your contrasting paper with dimensional dots to give your title a 3D look.  I chose to keep it flat and instead created depth with my other elements. 

I add several layers of dimensional dots to my photo to have it stand out above my embellishments.  If you don't want to use that many dimensional dots you can also create the same look with scrap paper.  Simply fold your paper into a tri-fold leaving the paper "puffed" then simply attach it to the backside of your photo.  By making the photo the "top" element it is sure not to get lost in the among the other elements.

The journaling tickets are perfect for adding important information. You can definitely handwrite it, but if you are like me, and do not care for your handwriting, run them through your printer. With a few changes in your document, you can align the words exactly where you want them!

I am LOVING this collection for my teenager layouts!  The papers and embellishments fit perfectly with these pictures.  When I saw all the lockers included in the collection, I had to go on the man hunt for this picture of my daughter and one of her friends in front of 'their' locker.

My daughter absolutely loves school! The back 2 school excitement seems to build up for her all summer and we look for that letter they send through the mail right before school starts, which tells us her teacher assignments! It's really fun for her. What we really enjoy though is going to Meet the Teacher, which is usually the Friday before school starts. She gets to check out her classroom and meet her teachers! This layout tells that story for her from this year's festivities.

I really love all the variations of banners and pennants in the Makin' the Grade collection - from the canvas to the cork shapes, fabric favorites and so much more, I had to use them all!

To make the title, I used the Fresh Verse stickers but I had already used some of the stickers so I used the "M" and the "T" stickers and then I cut the rest of the letters out of the Alpha Block paper from the 6x6 paper pad. It worked great and gave me a fun variety of letters that still coordinate. To make the cork elements pop just a bit more, I outlined them with black pen.

This is such a great back to school line!

Biker Chick Inspiration with Robbie Herring

Biker Chick Robbie Herring has a Makin' the Grade project and tips to share with us today.

I have really enjoyed working with the Makin' the Grade Collection.  This is my second layout with it and I've been getting some of my daughter's senior memories down on paper.  I love that Makin' the Grade, although at first glance might look like it's only for little ones, works perfectly for teens, too!

I chose to use the Alpha Block Paper for the background border on this layout.  I really like choosing a paper with lots of colors to go with pictures that have several people in them.  Seldom do the clothes in group pictures fit just perfectly with any paper and playing up the multiple colors works well even if not every color is a match.  I then topped that multi-colored paper with a more neutral paper to allow my photo to take center stage.

If you have seen much of my work, you know that I love lots of demension in my layouts.  Don't be afraid to add foam dots to your stickers, too!  Foam dots makes clustering embellishments so easy and gives you more options for layering.

I remember being a kid and always have all of my 8x10 class photos in an album.  That inspired my Teacher's gift project.  I used a school binder from my local big box store and decorated the front.  For the inside I used 8.5x11 page protectors and lined them with paper for my teach to add her photos through the years!

Altered Pen Set by Biker Chick Tania Willis

 

Teachers always need an abundance of pens, whether they be for grading papers, writing notes to send home, or to loan out to a student.  So, naturally, pens make for a great teacher’s gift.  Next time you’re at the store, grab a pack or two of clear-shell pens that have a bottom that is easily removable and you’ll be set to make your child’s teacher a set of decorative pens.  The ones I used were the R.S.V.P. style by Pentel, sold in a 2-pack for less than $1.  It’s as simple as removing the bottom and taking out the pen insert. Then, cutting your paper to 1” x 3 ¼”, rolling it tight (rolling around a skewer helps), then inserting it into the empty shell. Finally, put the pen stick back inside and replace the bottom piece.

Biker Inspiration with Heather Leopard

We have some fun Makin' the Grade project ideas from Biker Chick Heather Leopard today...

My first project is a set of cards for my daughter to give her two teachers on the 1st day of school. We like to give them a little treat on the first day, usually chocolate, because who can resist chocolate after a long, stressful day.  I made these little school house cards with my CAMEO and the Makin' the Grade collection.

My next project I'm showing you today is something I've been wanting to do for my daughter, which is to send little notes for her to find in her lunch box. The problem is that she likes to buy her lunch at school. I had an a-ha moment recently and realized I could just send them in her backpack. I'm sure she'll mostly look at them in the morning instead of for a lunch pick-me-up but either way, she'll know I'm thinking about her.

I cut these using my CAMEO and pieces them together. I can't wait for school to start so I can surprise her with these!

Makin' the Grade Projects with our Biker Chicks

We have a few back to school projects to share from our Biker Chicks Greta, Liz, Corrie and Robbie today.  We hope that you will feel inspired to create some keepsakes for someone special in your life or your child's life...

Biker Chick Greta Hammond created this amazing altered display of the ABCs and books.  Here is a tip from her... "I found these oversized wood letters and books at Hobby Lobby and thought they would be perfect for the Makin' the Grade line. I think the Locker paper is so fun so I started with that paper where it fit the best and then worked in a variety of other colors and patterns to make the display cohesive."

Biker Chick Liz Qualman (me) created an altered composition book.  I wanted to send something special to school with my daughter for her first day and I loved how the journal tag from the Tear Out Ticket book said "This book belongs to... so I made her a custom compostion book and bookmark."

I took this simple composition book and made this...

The tip to making this cover last for the entire school year is to make sure all of the paper and embellishments are flat, so I focused on the Favorite Pieces and Fresh Verse Cardstock Stickers as my main embellishments.  Then I will use strips of clear packing tape to "laminate" the design to the book.  Trust me as a teacher of many year, the packing tape is the bomb and will preserve this project pretty much forever.

It wouldn't be complete without a matching bookmark.

Biker Chick Robbie Herring decided to add the altered project to her layout.  That is a real clipboard nestled in her layout.  Here is what she had to say about it, "Think about using actually school supplies on your layouts.  On this one, I used a mini clipboard as part of my design.  It is a bit thick, but not any thicker than a lot of the flowers I include on some of my pages.  If it's thicker than you would like in your book, try putting it in a shadow box.  Use foam dots to help your design sit on top of thicker pieces.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Corrie Jones

Biker Chick Corrie Jones shares a more "mature" Back to School Layout with our Makin' the Grade collection...

My oldest started high school this week and it has really taken some adjusting for me.  She, of course, is loving it.  I just feel old.  It really was just yesterday that she was headed to kindergarten!  (Well, maybe that was my youngest, and it was Friday that she went, but it feels like yesterday that it was this one.)

I love making banners and for this page, the banner is a good school addition.  For this one, I used some pieces from the Paper Crafting Kit and cut smaller, but matching banner pieces out of different papers.  I decorated the banner pieces with die cuts from the paper crafting kit and star stickers.  I used adhesive to keep the banners in place and then used my sewing machine to stitch it all down and connect it.

My journalling says, " Knowing I'm not old enough to have a high schooler, I asked her to consider staying in 8th grade.  She said NO.  I'm glad at least she is ready for this."  This was a conversation we had had a few times.

Epiphany Crafts Swap - Day 4 - with Biker Chick Robbie Herring and the Splash Collection!

 

Ahhh....summer! I am finally heading to the beach this weekend and this blog swap featuring Epiphany Crafts' superb shape studios and LYB's Splash and The Escape collections are absolutely perfect for vacation time! This next layout from Biker Chick Robbie Herring is sure to get you in the mood for some rest, relaxation, and fun (and of course a little bit of scrapbooking!). Here's Robbie to tell you all about it!

 

I love the Splash collection and how it really compliments almost any summer photo.   I think that this collection almost scraps itself!  Adding the Epiphany Crafts embellishments to the Little Yellow Bicycle collection certainly makes for a winning combination!

 

 

For all of my flower centers, I used Epiphany tools.  I simply punched the paper to make my embellishments and poked a hole in the center so I could add a brad. It is really easy to punch through the center of the finished pieces using a Crop-a-Dile. 

 

 

 

In this photo you can see that I used both the Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio Scalloped Circle and the Small Circle.  I used the brads that were included in the Paper Crafting Kit for all the centers.  I thought it was a fun coincidence that one of the centers included in the kit fit perfectly on the back of the sticky epoxy piece from Epiphany Crafts.

 

 

I think that my favorite thing about the Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio tool is that you can see what you are punching.  I was able to punch exactly where I wanted on the patterned paper.   I was able to perfectly place the centers for my flowers.  So great and so easy to do!

 

 

Of course, like some of the other girls, I couldn't resist making some bubbles for my page.  The Small Round Shape Studio was the perfect size to add some little bubbles around my title.

I have been a fan of Epiphany Crafts for awhile now and I was excited to be a part of this product swap!!  I used the Ephiphany Crafts Shape Studio Star tool and Shape Studio Bubble Cap Stars along with LYB's The Escape line to create some fun embellishments on a layout!!

 

 

Instead of using paper with the Shape studio tool and epoxy shapes I layered the vellum tape strips!!  A little tip...you may need a dab of glue on the adhesive side of the stars with the vellum tapes.

 

 

 

I love how the stars turned out!!!  Such a great little tool!  Hope you give this idea a try.

Biker Chick Liz Qualman created a mini album with our Splash Collection, Canvas Mini Album and Epiphany Crafts Flower 25 Shape Studio

It was fun to use the Splash Collection to make a little beach scene for the cover of my album. The Fresh Verse Stickers made a great title attached to the chipboard sun, "Summer Livin' is Easy."

This Epiphany Crafts Shape Studio reminded me of starfish, so I used the Bubble Cap Flower Accessories to make some starfish with the 6 x 6 starfish patterned paper from LYB.

The Bubble Caps have great dimension and make the little starfish pop off the page.

LYB makes great Chipboard Shapes and this palm tree is a fun element included in the Splash collection, not to mention the super cute Fabric Favorite flip flops.

We had a great time at the beach and like the sentiment says, "Life is Better at the beach." 

The starfish Bubble Caps make a great theme for all of the pages in the album and even a little flower center on this blue Chipboard Shape flower.

You can't have a beach day without a proper sand castle.  I love how the Fresh Verse stickers capture the sentiment of the moment perfect along with the dimensional stickers.

to create contrasting embellishment bubbles, AND she used the Bubble Caps Accessories to create clear bubbles. So clever Corrie!

Summer to Summer, Little Yellow Bicycle Delivers

Today a few of our Biker Chicks wanted to share some summer projects with some of our favoraite LYB summer collections to celebrate how we are spending our time.  Biker Chick Corrie Jones made this wonderful multimedia page with our Splash Collection.

We had the most amazing week at the beach this year.  Well, every year is an amazing at the beach, but this year we tried something new - 4 wheel driving on the beach.  It was one of the coolest things I have ever done.  We were supposed to be looking for wild horses and we did see about 20, but my favorite part was being out in sun in a Jeep, driving all over.  I HAD to use Splash for this page.  So I scraped together the last pieces I had for this page.  I love the colors in this collection.  It is definitely one of my favorites for this summer!

Biker Chick Liz Qualman created this mini album with our Sweet Summertime collection for publication in the 2012 summer issue of Scrapbooking & Beyond Magazine.  You can find specific instructions for creating the album there, but Liz included a few tips here in the post...

Remember our Sweet Summertime collection?  LYB created this adorable little Banner Album with all the paper cut to size so the focus could be on embellishments, which is exactly what I did.

 

Instructions for the Cover:

Even though most of the work was done with the precut elements of the album, I wanted to give it a handmade feel with the custom stitching and twine.

• Use the blue precut banner paper and backstitch around the design.
• Cut smaller shape in red paper to mirror the design
• Add “bring on the sunshine” sentiment from the Fresh Verse Stickers
• Add chipboard pinwheels and jewel stickers
• Add Chipboard Spinner Sticker
• Swirl the Peapod bakers twine around the design and glue into place with clear glue

 

My family and I had such a great day on the lake and the colors of the Sweet Summertime Collection perfectly compliments the colors of our day.

I love the way twine looks wrapped around pages and cards and thought it would be fun to wrap this mini album page.  I also love how you can twirl the longer ends of the twine around a project, so I used the Tombow glue to stick the longer ties from the bow in a swirled pattern.

For this page, I wanted to combine the chipboard sentiment with the fresh verse sentiment to capture the moment of my kids snuggling in the boat.  The journal card makes a fun photo mat as well as a way to add some specific details from the day.  My husband did a great job of captain and this page is meant to honor his part in the event.  4 x 6 photos were just a tad too big for the chipboard album, but I found if I cropped them to be 4 x 5, they were a perfect fit.

I love scrapbook pages with multiple photos and wanted to create the same effect for this page, so I added three wallet-sized photos to show more of the event.  The Tear Out Ticket sentiment was a great photo mat to tie the page and photos together.

Had to end with a simple page about my son and since the banner page is pointy, I added a lot of round elements to balance the effect.

I tend to love larger journal cards, because they can be a great focal point in a mini album and take the place of a photo.  This one was a fun way to add a thought and then include embellishments that might over power a photo, but not the journal card like the kite and the cloud.  The twine looks fun tied through the chipboard button.

Biker Chick Inspiration with Jenny Chesnick

Biker Chick Jenny Chesnick has been listening to our fans and has a great two page project to share with our Escape Collection.  Check out some of her tips below...

On National Scrapbooking Day Little Yellow Bicycle asked what projects our readers would like to see.  One of the most popular answers was double page layouts.  I think this may be my fifth ever double page spread!  For some reason two pagers really intimidate me.  So for this spread I decided to look at it as an expanded one pager.  I created the one page feel by splitting the die-cut paper in the center of the layout.  I then used a 4 inch strip across the two pages to connect them and line my photos.  I tucked the smaller decorative edge paper underneath that strip to make it seem longer and add in another color.  When I look at the layouts it almost looks like it could be two pages separate.  I guess in my mind that made it easier for me to place my titles and embellishments.  What are you tips for the perfect two pager?  I would love to hear your ideas!

Another CHA Peek - Plus a Project from Biker Chick Shanna Vineyard featuring The Escape!

Hello friends! I'm back again with more CHA peeks. But before I get started, I have a quick share from Biker Chick Shanna Vineyard - because even though we're at CHA, it's still summer, and you may be on vacation and, well, I just couldn't wait to share this amazing project with you!

The Escape Travel Gift Case

I’m so excited to share this fun project with you!  While I was brainstorming for ideas on what to create using The Escape I kept thinking about a friend of mine who is leaving on a really nice vacation soon and how fun it would be to send her off with a fun little gift!

 

I found this paper Mache suitcase at Hobby Lobby and went to work altering it.  The first thing I did was cover it with a gel stain to give it an antique feel.  I’m thinking if I did another one of these I would probably just paint it a bright fun color…… that’s more ME! But I think it turned out cute anyway.  Next, I added all the fun The Escape goodies using the following products:

Biker Chick Inspiration from Heather Leopard

Biker Chick Heather Leopard has a great Splash idea to share today, but let's have her tell you all about it...

 

Hi there, friends!!!  I wanted to share this teeny tiny mini that I made using the Splash collection.  We’re going to the beach in a few weeks so I couldn’t resist making this “Vacation Favorites” mini for my girls. It’s a great way to list and showcase our beach weekend highlights.  I created it with my Silhouette CAMEO and a Lori Whitlock 2-page book card file The great thing is that I only used one piece of pattern paper!!!

The cover has a window on the front, which is the perfect size to add my title. Once I had that down as the foundation, I layered clear elements, a banner flag and flip flops. Oh and the file I downloaded calls for a wraparound band to close in the front but I changed it to close in the back so that I could make a more embellished cover and not have it interfere with all the elements. Doesn’t this look fun? Let’s take a look at the inside of the album.

I tried not to over think the pages inside the album.  The tear apart cards were perfect for that. I plan to use the journaling card as a frame for the photo that will go here with our 1^st favorite memory. I used the tear apart tags again for the “2” banner and just added the water splash clear die cuts to this page.   

Pages 3 & 4 are actually threaded through the center of the card so when I was looking at this mini spread, I could see a gap between the pages.  I solved that issue by using the vellum tape strips and layering them over each other. I topped it off with an accordion flower memory numbers.

Again, trying not to over think this last set of pages, I added another tape strip, banner and dimensional die cut and I went to my trusty tear apart tags stash and pulled the July tag out to add journaling for the back page. The canvas stickers and “happy” clear cut wrapped up this spread perfectly.

 

Now, all I have to do is add photos and maybe a few more embellishments here and there to finish it off.

 

Tip: When I’m creating a mini album I try to treat each page in it as a single or double page layout, just smaller and in this case, much smaller.  It really helps alleviate some of the stress of wondering what to do with all those pages.

Happy 4th of July

It's our country's birthday today and to celebrate we pulled out our Saturdays collection because of the Red, White and Blue elements.  Check out what our Biker Chicks Corrie, Liz, Tania and Jenny made to share...

Biker Chick Tania Willis created these cards and has a few tips and ideas to share...

For this particular card, I wanted to play on the whole theme of July being the month of fireworks, so I quickly transformed one of the felt & burlap flowers into a firework by inserting stick pins in a blue, red, blue, red pattern. I then loosely coiled some silver leather ribbon on either side of the firework to create a wonderfully dimensional semi-custom embellishment.

There is nothing particularly special of note about this ‘Freedom’ other than a quick mention looking for ways to make your supplies work for you.  In this case, instead of overlooking the alphabet stickers at the bottom of the ST – 140 Fresh Verse Cardstock Sticker pack because there is only one of each letter, I found a way to put them to use and convert the ‘3’ to and ‘E’ by simply turning the ‘3’ upside down.   If you’re ever short on an ‘O’, you can substitute the number zero or any round sticker or chipboard button in its place.

Get Ready for The Escape!

We are so excited to announce that our newest collection The Escape will be shipping next week.  Our Splash collection has been well-received and we think The Escape will be just as popular and compliments Splash perfectly.

Last summer, my family and I visited the Aquarium in Baltimore and this photo was taken there.  Being from Colorado, Baltimore seems like a "big city" to us, so the Clear Cut Shape sentiment was perfect.  We had so much fun on our trip that we had to measure with the Fun-O-Meter Chipboard Spinner.  I love the bright colors in this collection and how wonderfully they compliment this family photo.

Biker Chick Vicki Boutin made this clever mini album from the Tear Out Tickets that come with this collection.  What a fantastic idea for a little reminder about all of experiences on her trip.  It also makes an affordable option to buying a chipboard album and then embellishing , because many of the tags are already decorated and need minimal embellishment.

Flag Your Summer Fun with a Splash

Our Biker Chicks love the embellishments at Little Yellow Bicycle, especially when it is something new that has not appeared in previous collections.  Check out what Biker Chicks Vicki Boutin, Greta Hammond and Liz Qualman did with our Splash collection Mini Flag Kit.

Vicki made this great page with both the Mini Flag Kit and the 5 Things Pocket.  The embellishments go together perfectly to create both a fun message and personalized journaling element.

Greta Hammond used the same Mini Flag Kit to make this super cute card with the fun flip flops on the sandy beach.

Liz Qualman decorated this printer's tray about a recent vacation to the beach with the Mini Flag Kit which adhered easily to the tray and keeps the eyes moving around the project.
